Like many people in the Delaware Valley and around the world, the loss of Harry Kalas is a crushing blow. The Philadelphia Phillies identity began with Karry Kalas. He was more than just a broadcaster. He was the quintessential broadcaster that opposing players admired and couldn’t wait to hear their homerun or significant play called by Harry. He was that important to the game.

On Saturday, April 18th, thousands of Philly fans paid tribute to the man. Harry’s casket laid in state at home plate in Citizens Bank Park, allowing the public to pay their respects. A grateful community appreciated the time and effort by the Phillies organization, and to the Kalas family for allowing the public event. He was one of us, so it was a fitting farewell to such a personable man.

I was only able to watch the tribute on TV, though my heart was with the crowd in the stands. It was a nice parade of guest speakers, including current Philly Jamie Moyer and former Philly Michael Jack Schmidt, to name a few. The moment I lost my emotional control - and I tear up just thinking about it as I write - was when the players, media members and front office staff lined up in two lines on the first base side and passed the casket down the line, all the while Simon & Garfunkle’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters played throughout the stadium. At the end of the line, several players, Utley, Howard, Victorino included, and Charlie Manual, placed the casket in the hearse and we watched it drive off. Not a dry eye in the place.

While I’ve never met this man, it was like losing an Uncle. When I moved to the Philly area in 1977, he was the voice that I heard over the transistor radio under my covers. For 30 plus years he was the one constant I had with my Phillies. My only regret is that I didn’t get to meet him, because from all the stories I’ve heard over the past week, he’s someone I wish I could have known.

I hope heaven is a better place now that he is there, reunited with Whitey, because here on Earth, we miss him!

RIP Harry…

I don’t particularly like Mr. Moore, nor do I care for his liberal spin to his movies. However, for the first time ever, I enjoyed his comments on this bailout plan. It was insightful, and brought to light some interesting points. See! There’s a first for everything…

Have you compared headlines from CNN and FoxNews lately. The desparity is unreal, to say nothing of the spin. On Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, CNN, also known as the Clinton News Network by my Republican friends, posted several headlines including three that spoke negatively about Sarah Palin, and one that stated Bill Clinton predicted a landslide victory for Obama over McCain. At the very same moment, FoxNews highlighed the US/China plans for North Korea, the evacuation of Texas residents, and how McCain and Obama put aside their differences during a forum event at Columbia University. Not that FoxNews was Pro-Republican at all, in fact, posted articles about Palin’s weaknesses and how Obama should focus on her inexperience and inability to lead, yada yada yada. But there was no spin, just facts, allowing us to make up our own minds about the election. Fair, unbiased, reasonable. CNN just goes on about how bad Republicans are and how great Democrates will be when they run the country. Completely biased, treating the readers as idiots. It’s no wonder CNN has been called out recently, much like the NY Times.

So, in fairness to all, and remaining unbiased, read what you want, but take everything with a grain of salt. Be the bigger person and don’t get all of your world news from one source.

I am a white male, age 37, and a retired Army officer. Although I am a registered Republican, I am actually considering voting for Obama. When I mentioned this to a friend, she brought to light several reasons why that is not a good idea. Specifically, what bothers her is the fact that the Democrats want to raise taxes. This impacts people in my tax bracket, obviously. But to be honest, I see her point. I grew up poor. My father worked two jobs just to make ends meet. As the youngest child, I am the first to graduate from college, because I joined the military. In 1995, I claimed seven W-2 forms of income because I busted my butt to earn money. Frankly, I worked hard to get where I am today and am tired of having my hard earned money taken from me to fund programs that have no chance of working. I’d rather take that money and help my own children pay for college. I’d rather invest that money for my retirement since I can not count on Social Security to be there for me. I’d rather do something on my own accord, like the Bible tells me, to help those in need then rely on the government to do that on my behalf. Our goverment, in my opinion, allows people to take advantage of our good will. When I was in college, I did student teaching in a large town near Philadelphia. This one particular 5th grader was not doing very well in school, mostly because he didn’t put any effort into his school work. I questioned him on his behavior, why he didn’t seem to try. His response was that he was going to be a famous football star and make lots of money. I asked what he would do in the event he blew out a knee and didn’t make it to the pros. His answer was, “I’ll let the government take care of me, like my mom does!” How screwed up is that, but we manifest that behavior because the government rewards it. That’s MY money that is going to support people like that. That’s MY money that is basically stolen from me, in the name of charity. That’s MY HARD EARNED MONEY that is given to, in many cases, lazy people getting a free ride. What is the new administration going to do to stop this fleecing of MY MONEY?

The recent news about NY Gov. Spitzer may be concidered “shocking” and “perverted” by some. The fact is, it’s about time we look around and realize that, hey, even lawmakers need a hobby. I say legalize prostitution and tax it. Just because some people have this bug up their butt that it’s somehow a bad thing in life, get over it. I blame the Victorian era for lowering the social status of a prostitute.

The simple truth of the matter is, we need prostitutes in our society. Spitzer’s not a pervert or devient. He’s a man with needs. My question is, “what’s wrong with his marriage that he has to stray?” There are wives out there who, for whatever reason, prefer that their husband goes elsewhere for sex. Perhaps she doesn’t enjoy it, perhaps she finds the man offensive, or perhaps they have such an open relationship that it doesn’t bother her. In fact, some wives will even participate.

Let’s wake up people! Legalize it, tax it, put rules in place to regulate it.

So the big question coming out of the Democratic party is, are we ready for either a black president or a woman president. This is quite unique since it’s usually a question of are we ready for a jackass or a dumbass or another political crook.

But a question of a black or woman is actually worth contemplating. After all, I believe Colin Powell should have been the republican candidate. And we have a black woman in Condi Rice, so we are not adverse to either option.

No, the real question is are we ready for THESE particular candidates. Barack Obama is certainly no Colin Powell, and Hilary Clinton is certainly no…well, let’s just say I wouldn’t spit on her if she was on fire.

The truth is, no one is clean. We all have skeletons in our closet. I know I wouldn’t cast the first stone. In fact, I would prefer someone with a little edge. But looking at these candidates, I can’t get behind anyone. Joe Biden has the best political track record and is a genius when it comes to foreign policy. My decision this year may come down to who makes Joe Biden their running-mate.

Barack Obama is a well spoken man. Not just a well spoken black man, but a well spoken man, period. His checkered past is a big concern. He does have a Muslim past, but he claims he’s a Christian. I can’t help thinking, we in for a bait-and-switch?

Hilary just plain scares me. I don’t trust her or her husband. He was a terrible President who reaped the benefits of programs put in by Reagan and Bush the first. What Bush the second inherited was trash, to oversimplify it. I would hate to have 4-8 more years of that.

So are we ready for a black or woman president. Yes we are. We have been immersed with both already, in all layers of government. Pellosi, Rice, Powell, Jackson, to name a few, as well as others from around the world. We just aren’t ready for these. And the shame of it is, one of them will most likely win this election and will scar that respective legacy.
